Actually, the Mayans were a time-obsessed people whose precise astronomical observations reuslted in a complex and accurate calendar system, which abruptly ends at 2012.

It was the originally the Aztecs and that prediction is predicated on the Aztec calendar which also happens to be Mexico's National Symbol .The Aztec Stone Of the Sun Calendar. The date is based on the 52 year cycle of the Aztec Calendar coinciding with the last time Quetzelcoatl returned to revisit the Aztec Empire. Since the Arrival in Mexico of Hernando Cotez (who according to the Aztecs at the time was thought to be the Return of Quetzlcoatl for that 52 year cycle) there have been about 10 Cycles since that incident which is about 520 years ago according to Gregorian Calendar.

The Mayan calendar ends in 2012. This does not mean the world will end in 2012. It means, quite simply, that the people who were putting the calendar together stopped there.

It was a sensible place to stop. They went about 700 years, then decided it could be continued at a later time. How many years would you go if you had no computer to do it for you?

Yes the Aztec calendar ends on May 12, 2012.

I would also suggest you read some books by Zecariah Sitchin. According to old Babylonian/Assyrian myths, the nephilim (genesis chapter 4) are supposed to return to earth.

First, it was the Mayans. Your verb tense is all wrong too. Makes it sound like we already passed 2012. It isn't so much that the world will end, but that the world as we know it will change drastically. The only way to know for sure is to see what happens in December of 2012.

The Mayan Calendar ends in 2012, it predicts not necessarily the end of the world, but the dawning of a new era.

it was the Mayans, not the aztecs. December 21, 2012 (winter solstice) to be precise. their calendar ends then. why is matter of debate.
