I am a semi-pro trap shooter and I am competing in Las Vegas next week. I've never traveled by plane with my gun.

Obviously you can't carry it on as carry-on luggage, but I believe you may be able to check it as baggage in the cargo hold. Alternatively, the airline can arrange an overnight FedEx type of delivery for you to Vegas. Obviously, you need to call the airline and see what the rules are here.

It need to be in a rifle case that locks and checked with your luggage. I a few suggestions for you...

1. if you haven't bought a rifle case yet, buy one with TSA friendly locks. Or purchase TSA friendly locks for your existing case. Reason being is TSA will open the case and inspect you gun.
2. upon arrival to your destination city don't panic if your gun doesn't come up the carousel. Your frinedly ramp agent will be walking it in and hand it to you directly. Have your claim check ready.

You can check it as baggage. I believe it has to be in a locking case (unloaded of course) and any ammo you have must be in a separate fireproof locking case.
