I'm having trouble installing a new motorola 5120 cable modem, the problem is when I run the installation software, it doesn't detect the modem (connected via ethernet), but my PC's local area connection icon shows a connection at 100 Mbps. Everything else seems to be fine the cable company reads a good signal coming from the modem when they ping, the lights on the modem don't seem indicate that there's a problem. When I open the device manger and look at the connection, it shows a number in the received column, but reads 0 in the sent column. My modem is registered & talking to the cable company on the phone didn't help, they're sending a service guy out, but of course that takes almost 2 weeks.
If anyone can give me some ideas that may help it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Also, using the usb ports doesn't work either, so I don't think it's the ethernet cable.

Sounds to me like you need to renew your IP address. Visit my site below and in the Network Talk section, under building your network is an area that covers how to do this. Hope this helps

Do you need to have the software installed to connect to the internet? Or is a a service like AOL? I had the same problem when I first bought one of my wireless routers. The software would not detect the router, but when I researched further found that there was nothing that I really need on the install disc windows xp took care of everything for me. If anything I would try to download the software from online and install it from there. Of course make sure all you wires are connected properly blow out you computer with a can of air and then use some contact cleaner on all areas inside and wherever you can think of.
