I completely agree!!!! Why is the most important thing to ever happen for mankind, the birth of our savior, pushed to a back burner so that companies can use this time of year to cram advertisements for pointless, trivial items down our throats?? And they make it seem like if you don't spend obsurd amounts of money on trinkety junk then you are somehow less of a person. It's so sad that this is what people see as important at this time of year. What I really hate to hear is that fights break out in stores because of the new, "must have" toy this year. Give me a break! Nothing is worth treating another human being like crap. That's really showing the Christmas spirit...let me shove you down and trample you because my spoiled brat needs that toy more than yours. How many kids still play with the toys they received the year before? Kids have short attention spans, they have probably gotten 20 new toys throughout the year that have all been thrown aside for the next new one. And now car companies are getting into things. Seriously, how many people go out and pay cash for a new car? It probably goes more like this, "Merry Christmas honey. You're monthly payments are $600. Enjoy." All that aside, how many people really buy a car for someone? I'm guessing not many. I'd rather be able to spend time with family & friends than get any object in the world. Christmas is time to spend with the people you love celebrating the greatest gift ever, Jesus Christ.

This is an interesting thought. When I was a kid, I received several presents that were really cool and trendy. Now the kids still want cool and trendy stuff and boy, is it expensive!!! But it's the times, things cost. It's funny, now that I have lost one of my parents, and all of my grandparents, several aunts and uncles, I would give all of that stuff back to just have a game of Trivial Pursuit around the table on Christmas Day with them again. Even now, I find with my own kids, I am buying them less and doing more with them the last few years. We bought a 3 dollar puzzle last year and spent the evening working on it and laughing, and my kids are pre-teens, not little ones. They enjoyed the time and ask if we can do it again this year. The one memory that stands out are the snacks, hot chocolate and a 3 dollar puzzle. I'm really glad for that. I am hoping to show them that family and friends are way better pursuits.

I do think Christmas is too commercial. Some people get so caught up in the gifts that they forget what Christmas is really about. It is to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

And you're right. Why spend a fortune on presents when you really can't afford to? the people will get bored with them in a month anyway, or end up breaking them

I do agree with you that Christmas and a lot of other major religious holidays have gotten too commercialized. I don't have the money to buy my family presents, but I am blessed to get together with family and just spend the day celebrating the birth of the greatest gift of all, Jesus Christ.

I absolutely agree! What happened to the true meanings of christmas and gift giving? This year, even though I guess I shouldn't have been, I was absolutely shocked to see Christmas stuff out BEFORE Halloween. It's all about making money, selling, selling, selling. Bigger gifts, better gifts. $500 video games that people are sleeping out for!!!! Commercials that actually feature CARS as appropriate gifts! How about a hug? Love? A homemade batch of cookies? A scarf you knitted yourself? Don't get me wrong, not everyone is crafty, and I totally understand that. But, c'mon people....how much did you SPEND this year. To outdo the next giftgiver?

Yes. People have forgotten that this is the celebration of the birthday of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The real gift, for spiritually mature people anyway, is to get to spend time with friends and family.

ya know, christmas for me has stayed the same. my heart remains open and i give love to the ones that supported me and stood by side. some people use it as a way to earn to money, i don't care though, because someday they'll be punished for that. God's gonna decide whether or not these people, who don't feel love for anyone than money, will go to heaven or hell.
Stay away from these people, don't let them affect you
just stay strong and give love before it's too late.

Of course. The retail industry will use anything it can to make money. We shouldn't take it too personal. Yes, it's about the birht of Christ but unfortunately not everyone has that understanding b/c they don't believe.

Well of course it's commercialized, you say that as if it's a bad thing. We are fortunate enough to at least live in a quasi-capitalist country where people are free to enterprise on whatever makes them money. If you want christmas decorations and presents and other such things, someone has to make them and they need proper payment so as to pay for the production and profit so that they might feed their families and buy them stupid christmas themed crap as they see appropriate. We're also free to not purchase the crap we don't want, so if you've got a problem with it, don't purchase it.

If you're telling me you've got a problem with consumer capitalism, you're telling me you've got a problem with the idea of liberty itself. The alternative is that you can't get anything for christmas because the grips of socialism are stopping any free enterprising from being able to efficiently produce anything, and we're not far from it.

Abdolutely so. In fact we don't do gifts anymore because of the reasons you state. We all get together for a meal and a bit of a party instead....it's much more enjoyable.
