Heavy Metal and Rock are two different things:

Rock is defined as having loud guitars, high pitched usually male vocals, subjects like girls, cars, life woes or genrally having a good time whilst drink Bud Light in Jersey ie. Bon Jovi

Heavy Metal is a lot more serious and usually has some or all of the following: very loud distorted guitars and drums, gruff and gutteral male vocals (mostly male), black clothing, leather, spikes, long hairs, subject matter can include death, satan, war, politics...i.e Metallica, Slayer, Pantera etc...

A common addition to both rock and metal shows is the "throwing of the devil horns". How you do this is easy:

Fold your 2nd and 3rd finger over and place under your thumb in the center of your palm, extend the 1st and 4th finger out to make the "horns". Raise your hand high in the air and pump backwards and forwards to the beat of the music. Be sure to do this at only trully rocking moments other wise you will come across as a total poser!

Hope I have helped you - now go and RAWK!!
