yeah if ya'll meet in person, it's not gonna work talking to someone cyber style and expecting a friendship

Most of the time...YES and many a times NO. Because while chatting things that are said does not have any authenticity. Even after chatting, when you talk to a person - youjust hear and you can judge a person to some extent. Meeting a person gives you a way to understand and analyse about actual behaviour, attitude, looks and age.
Similarly things also depend how good you are in judging people.
The answer to your question is YES and NO both having 50 % chances.

Yes, I've had a few people I've chatted with by e-mail, IM, and lastly telephone, and we've met in person, as well as text'd when they and I got text messaging on our cell phones.
