Do I need a router just to hook up a second computer to my cable modem? I have an ethernet cable ... Can't I just hook the ethernet cable up to my cable modem thats hooked up to the other computer? Not very good with computers so if this is possible I need to do anything else .. let me know.. thanks

Maybe. Depending on the model of the modem, it may connect into a single device or multiple devices.

If the modem is not a wireless modem and has onlt one network port in the back, then only one device can connect to it. If the modem is also a router, then it may have multiple network connections in the back. If it's wireless, then you can connect multiple computers using the wireless network.

If you want to hard-wire multiple computers and the modem only has a single port, then yes, you'll need a router in order to do that.

there is alsos the possiblility of having the second computer looking to the first as a proxy. this will enable the second computer to be "hidden" beind the first, and virtually unhackable. i prefer a program called PROXYJ (not affiliated). it is freeware. the only problem with doing it that way is that yo have to have the first computer on to use the second comp on the internet

if you have two hook-ups on the modem if not you'll need a router
