My favorite was the mustang from about '67 through '70. They weren't true "muscle cars", though the Boss 302's were pretty close.
Probably the best pure muscle car was a Plymouth Road Runner/Dodge Charger with either the 428 Hemi or the 440 6-pack. (Though I did love the '68-'69 GTO's and the Chevelle SS's)
It always tickled me that...at the beginning of the muscle car era, the automakers would sometimes "exagerate" their motor's horsepower to increase sales. Then...at the end of the era...the same automakers were downplaying their motors' horsepower ratings because no insurance companies would write policies for them. Chrysler always rated its latter Hemi's as 425 horsepower, when the things were producing probably 500 or better. It wasn't unusual for the monthly premiums on auto insurance for those things to be more than the monthly payment for the car.

The Plymouth Road Runner was the no-frills muscle car version of intermediate Belvedere, Sebring, and later Volare sedans built by the Plymouth division of the Chrysler Corporation in the United States between 1968 and 1980. In 1968, the original batch of muscle cars were in the opinion of many moving away from their roots as relatively cheap fast cars as they gained more and more options. Although Plymouth already had a performance car in the GTX, they decided to go back to the drawing board and reincarnate the original muscle car concept. Plymouth wanted to create a car that would run 14 second times in the quarter mile and would sell for less than US $3,000. They met both of their goals and the idea of the low-buck musclecar hit the street. The success of the Road Runner would far outpace the upscale and lower volume GTX, with which it was often confused.

If you ask 20 people you will get 40 different answers. That is the unfortuante part of that question. I prefer the 1969 Chevelle SS. A lot of my friends like these and also the 69 Camaro Z28. These are all chevy options. I know that Mopars Superbee, GTO and others like were very popular and finally the ladies muscle the Mustang has always been popular.

Folks... Mustangs and Camaros are not muscle cars... they are pony cars. I'd say the best muscle car ever made was a '69 Ford Torino GT, or Mercury Cyclone GT.

I would honestly say it would have to be the 68 or 69 Road Runner (or maybe even a Charger) but which ever body style you chose, the determing factor would be the engine.
Hands down 426 Hemi.
Those are amazing machines to drive.
