It was the end of innocence for the United States. We had just solved the Bay of Pigs and the missles of October and we were in the start of the build-up of Vietnam.

You need to understand right after that, Martin Luther King was shot, Malcolm X was shot, Bobby Kennedy was shot, there were riots at the Democratic convention in Chicago... 4 students were shot by the national guard in Kent State University....

It was a very bad time.

I was 6 years old. I remember the funeral on televison vividly. My mother has always made it a point that I was sulking and annoying because all regular programming had been cancelled and there were no cartoons on.
Naturally I never realized the impact and couldn't understand why my mother just sat on the crouch crying and crying throughout the whole thing.
I also recall my mother ironing clothes on night and the announcment that Martin Luther King had been assassinated. She left the iron and ran next door to the neighbors to tell my father. The last was getting up and turning on the TV and the constant broadcasts when Bobby Kennedy was shot. I ran into my parents room with my sister and told my mother Bobby Kennedy had been shot. My fathet woke up and said "Jesus Christ not again" and my mother...typical mother...said "You better not be lying about this".
The impact? Well....Kennedy was a very likable president by most everyone except Madam Diem and Fidel Castro. Even Nikita Kruschev begrudgingly mourned his passing. I think one of the big factors here was it was one of the few times the American public became enamoured with Jackie, his wife. She was young, well spoken ,very educated and dressed beautifully. Their family life was an open book to the public and they were shown doing things that an average family would to together. I mean besides sailing and horseback riding.
The majority of the American public was devestated over such a brutal killing and even other nations were shocked and horrified. I had to feel sorry for Lyndon Johnson, who knew that the Kennedy's dislikes him and made fun of him as well as the political staff. He really had some large shoes to fill and carried on many of Kennedy's policies like civil rights and of course the escalation of the Vietnam War...which don't let anyone kid you....Kennedy would have done the same and pumped in troops as well.

It is unforgettable. I have heard it on the news, and it was devastating, and my girl was on the way home from school, since they closed, and let the children go home. We were watching TV hoping that the President would survive, but soon found that he had indeed lost his life. The Country mourned for days watching every detail in tears. The country was united in sadness, grief and prayer. You will find enough information either by using the Yahoo, or Google search engines. Even now the stunning sadness returns , when one thinks of the time, when JFK was assasinated, and the two young children left without a father.

Aside from the tragedy itself, it had a profound effect on US domestic policy.

Lyndon Johnson came into office and presided over an enormous expansion of the federal government. Medicare, Medicaid, Welfare, Public Housing, etc. etc., were all part of LBJ's wholesale application of Keynsian economics to American life.

However, the ramifications became known as the US economy began to slow dramatically, productivity fell to almost zero, inflation surged, the cities began emptying out, and the national debt began increasing.

The one positive contribution made by LBJ was the Voting Rights Act. Otherwise, he was a corrupt buffoon.

The world cried. Especially the US did. We were all shocked, angered, disbelieving.

Similar to the feelings at 9/11

I dont know what impact it had on the US, beyond waking us up for a while to the fact that the world isn't safe.

November 22, 1963, he died the next day. Hard to say the impact it had. Maybe the Vietnam War would have played out differently, Perhaps Lyndon Johnson's "great society" wouldnt have happened. Who Knows?

I was in the third grade, a student came in from the office and handed my teacher a piece of paper, she started crying and told the class the president has been shot and we had to go home. When we went home there was nothing on TV but the newsreel of him being shot and they played it over and over. Everyone was in total shock. Seeing his wife in her bloodstained dress holding the Bible to swear in President Johnson was unbelievable. Jackie Kennedy had the utmost class, his children at the funeral procession, little John-John saluting the horse drawn casket. I will never forget it. We couldn't believe it had really happened. But then President Johnson escalated the war in Viet Nam and people soon forgot because Viet Nam soon became the hot topic of conversation.

Hi this is George Bitar,

Yes, it had a huge impact, and still does to this day. Horrible tragedy for the United States. Same type feeling like 9/11.

Thanks,

Many US leaders wondered if the killing was a reprisal for JFK's ordering the assination of another country's leader. The US went on military alert.
