davidg3e2 needs a good enema... Fusion power will fall by the wayside when matter-anti-matter energy engines are perfected (and that isn't too far off).
AND the greatest, most important scientific achievement will be the invention of the faster than light drive (the warp engine). It will allow mankind to explore the universe... The Final Frontier!! AND that will affect our lives as no other invention has!

Figuring out why gravity affects light will be a major breakthrough, but so far no one has really bothered to look into it. One being researched right now however is, is wireless energy transfer possible. Some MIT professors wrote a theoretical design paper on it. Answering this question could change the way we do everything.

Science, it frightens me. I look at the future and see genetics as the new atom (remember the 50s was the atomic age) well most things will be along those lines, but I am really scared of how we will go forward about that. I don't know, maybe I've been reading far to much Crichton.
Regardless I see the biggest leaps in Genetic research within the next few years

Nuclear controlled fusion power and a 'bean stalk' elevator into orbit.
Disease control with the help of genetic engineering.
That's for the next 100 years.
Another would be a computer with enough memory and processing power, to first be able to think like a human (just hopefully not with as much stupidity as we are capable of!) and eventually becoming self-aware.

Now this is important YOU SHOULD READ:
Well it is not what will be in the future but will YOU be in the future. Scientists have discovered "Cryonics"; that is freezing your body after you die, they leave you frozen in a facility until they have studied how to bring you back to life, by using "nanotechnology"; the problem is they need to make a microscope that can see a billionth of a meter, a "nanometer(NM)"
Got to www.howstuffworks.com, and type in "nanotechnology", in the white box on upper right corner, click on "go" and then when you are done reading that type in "cryonics" and click "go"

The first one; a Greek philosopher argued against the worship of the pagan gods famously saying "Zeus is an adulterous, lecherous tyrant, and his wife hera is a petty, evil woman that destroys lives; I would not bow to them, or declare my loyalty if they were men, so it makes no sense to worship them as gods...." Indeed if you have read the Greek myths, the pagan gods are not exactly a role model of ethical behavior.

New and more efficient energy production.
Without this, we will eventually hit a ceiling as a society. Obviously, we will eventually run out of 'fuels to run the machinery of our society. However, it goes further than that, for example, without other means to generate energy, we will not be able to travel in space (fuel storage is one of the biggest problems with travel to other planets).

Hi >
Me & my mate are putting together a steam-driven car, based on a Mini for next summer.
It could be a an important scientific acheivement.

Although it's highly unlikely, a time machine would be useful. But would probably result in mass wars and terrorism...
