The best resolution for print is 300 dpi (dots per inch). For your poster, the dimensions of your digital image should be 6000 pixels by 9000 pixels. This will be a printable image of 20" x 30" at 300 dpi.

if you're printing a poster from a snapshot or photoshop image, then 300 dpi (dots per inch) would be the minimum. That is called a raster image. But if you're creating an image in a vector based program (like adobe illustrator, for instance) then resolution isn't even defined, as the images are defined by a mathematic description, and can be blown up to whatever size you need. If you are indeed printing from a raster image, then make sure that you not only have a high resolution, but also take the picture at the size you want the poster to be. If you enlarge the picture to fit the 20"x30" size, you will loose the clarity that the high resolution gives you.
