What are the major benefits consumers receive from savings? how does this compare to reasons that someone might choose to save their mother rather than spend it.

In my personal experience, the biggest benefit in savings in piece of mind. Knowing that you have something to fall back on in times of need and emergency is by FAR the greatest benefit to keeping some cash set aside in a savings account.
As a matter of fact, just yesterday I was able to help a friend in need get an airline ticket that he had to have to get home to his family that I wouldn't have been able to do for him had I not built in a savings-minded financial plan.
So you can save yourself AND your mother should the need arise!
