Mexicans, Hispanics, or Latinos ?

2006-12-11 03:56:17 · 10 answers · asked by #1 "Abuela" 4 in Society & Culture Other - Society & Culture

WHY then does the "Gov't" and some other organizations try to label persons from Mexico as "Hispanic" or "Latino" ?

We have some friends whose heritage is Mexican so, when asked they state quite BOLDLY that they're MEXICAN/AMERICAN.

"Hispanic" and "Latino" are racist words which are ONLY used in the United States, NEVER in Mexico.

The people, culture, art, cuisine, music, place names and heritage of the people of Mexico is MEXICAN, only the language is "Hispanic!"

While Mexicans DO consider themselves part of "Latin America," (the parts of the Americas which speak Latin-based languages - Spanish, Portuguese and French - verses the part that speaks English.) Neither they nor many of their ancestors are from Rome or Italy, they don't speak much high-school Latin, their racial bloodlines are over 80% native, indigenous Mexican and therefore they are not "Latins" or "Latinos."

I don't know what you people in the US want to call yourselves, that's your business. But down here in Mexico, we are simply all Mexicans... In the future, please try to remember that (and tell the rest of the gringos too.........)

This is also a response to stupid comment you made earler. Chicano refers to Americans with Mexican Ancestry who don't feel an attachment to Mexico yet they don't feel completely accepted in American society. You need to read a book. Meicans are an ethnicity, Hispanics encompass ANY and EVERY group that has bloodlines that trace back to Spain and or the Iberian Peninusla, and Latino includes people in Latin America, Mexico. A Mexican can be all three, but they tend to refer to themselves as Mexicanos, A person from Cuba is a Latino and a Hispanic.

You would be considered Mexicans because you'd be from Mexico. Hispanics and Latinos are people that are from countries like the Bahamas and islands near there.
