Some people are just natural collectors. They collect salt and pepper shakers, figurines, coins, etc.
I collect bills and dust.

There are several reasons:
--They are beautiful. Where else can you buy a fine engraving for a few cents?
--They are interesting. They show you the history, geography, and artistic style of each country.
--It is very relaxing to categorize them and learn about them.
--You get to own little pieces of history - especially if you collect the whole envelopes instead of just the stamps on them.
--You meet some of the most fascinating people imaginable at stamp clubs and stamp shows. I've met a radio announcer, several professional athletes, a TV actor, a biochemist,a lot of college professors, etc, etc. They all have a large degree of intellectual curiosity which makes them lively company.

Some people could collect all kinds of stamp for keeps, not because they want to use it.
This is because RARE STAMPS COULD BE TREASURES. Especially those outdated ones.
I have read a James Hardley chase series - YOUR'E DEAD WITHOUT MONEY: with that story about a wealthy man who keeps old and rare stamps. He locks it all up with strong security, eventually the russians or so began to look for a rare stamp with a head which only he had. They were willing to pay a huge amount for it.
THEY COULD BE WORTH SOMETHING HUGE presently or in time to come.

Some stamps are absolutely amazing and quite beautiful. It is a quiet hobby that is very relaxing and educative, and they do not take a lot of room as a collection.

for the hobby of collecting them and the different syles and pictures on them and for the authenticity of the stamp or just for the matter of why people like collecting shells, baseball cards, football cards, or putting model cars together or collecting coins for the value of the coins. some people just like collecting things like that. i like collecting porceline dolls or certain little objects or stuffed bears. people have the pleasure of collecting because it is unique.

Because when you get a rare stamp, it will eventually become worth a crapload of money. And with a binder full of expensive stamps, that can make anyone happy.
