Get your dad a computer game, or several for that matter. He's an engineer, so obviously he likes to design things. Maybe get a landscaping game or the old favorite, the Sims. He can do whatever he wants to them. Any kind of word game would be keen.
My favorite thing is the gift certificate. If you know he'll buy what ever he wants, a gift certificate to his favorite store will be fine. Slip it under his mouse. He'll love the surprise!

My father is the same way, last year they got a camper and 2 weeks before Christmas, he ordered EVERYTHING for it online. So, I bought him solar lights for his outdoor patio umbrella. They fit right under the umbrella part and the solar plate sits on top. He loves it. And let me tell you it was a hard gift to think of. The point is, every year I examine every thing he has and try to make just one thing a little bit better. I actually try to make it like a game, what in the heck can I get him that he'll use?? If he likes to sit outside under an umbrella, I've got your number..lol

Dads of that age are hard to buy for cause they have everything and know everything. Why don't you give him an experience, rather than a gift, the experience will be remembered longer than the gift and you will have a good time together. Get tickets and go with him to a place you know he likes ie - hockey, football, baseball, movie, engineering seminar, favorite restaurant - that sort of thing

I would recommend a gift certificate with a twist............ Make a homemade certificate to one free dinner at home...... After the Christmas holidays are over call you dad and ask him what night he would like his free homemade dinner at home then you pick up all the ingredients for the dinner right down to desert then go over on the day he suggested and cook him dinner for two or three ( your hubby) then either you and your dad or the three of you can enjoy a dinner at home and spend this special time with him. If you have kids get a babysitter and leave them at home.
