i have a m reg cavalier and im having problems with the revs sticking. I have been told its the ecu unit that has been altered, why i dont know(boy racer?). can i just buy a used one from the scrap yard and plug it in or will this not work? Do you know why someone would do this to the ecu?

My friend you are not understanding me.

The ECU came from the factory it was made that way. I never said it has been re-programmed. I said it can be re-programmed to solve your revving problem.

I would just put up with it as thousands of others have. Dont bother with a second hand one it could be just the same or worse.

I doubt very much if it the ecu , you cannot alter an ecu they are a solid state unit , and it would not effect the revs at any rate , it is more likely be simply a throttle cable sticking or if its a 16 valve they has a engine management ecu there again they cannot be altered if the tick over speed is not set correctly between 850 and 900 revs , it will cause the air valve controller to try to correct the slow running and it will make the engine fluctuate wildly

Hi there i presume your cav has the ecotec engine in it ? the engine is controlled by a smitec 56.1 engine management system, the most common cause of revs sticking on this vehicle is the idle air control valve sticking, this is located in the throttle body assembly and is best to be replaced as even if they are ultrasonically cleaned they still tend to stick. If you have a local garage then ask them if they have an advanced code reader as they will be able to interigate the ecu and check for any stored fault codes. Also there is a thin vacum pipe from the throttle body assembly going to the camshaft cover, this could be blocked up and cause the problems you are describing, with this engine it is important to keep all pipes clear, also if you do need the idle speed adjusting you do need to have a Tech 2 set to alter it, just altering the the stop on the cable will just alter the signal voltage from the sensor and could cause a fault code to show up. If you do go down the ecu road then you can buy a second hand one from a scrapyard but it will need to be taken to a vauxhall dealers as the electronic imobilliser code will be different to the one in the chip in your key, this means the ecu will have to be coded to the car, this needs to be done by a machine called a tech 2 which a vauxhall dealer has it would cost about £20 to have the key coded to the ecu

yes but you also have to replace your ignition as well and keys because the ecu is programed to the chip in your key so you car wont start but befour doing this i would look at were your cable throttle is on your car cos it mite just need a Little wd 40 on there there again if your if your revs are up and down it could be the brain on your throttle so get a diagnostic check at your local garage that will tell you wots wrong

are you talking about the engine management system or the air con unit? the engine management will only work with the chip installed you can get them re-programed by the main dealer but to be fair it will cost more than the car is worth. if it the air con unit yes just get a used one but if it's stood for a while it will smell.

if the numbrers match exactly that from the one you remove then yes a straight swap is ok but i'd get your throttle body cleaned 1st as it may not b an ecu problem

yes a slong as you get one from the same car with the same drivetrain

if it has a prom chip then try a stock one, you probably dont have to replace the entire ecm

the engine control is in the prom chip,

you could getone for dirt cheap from someone on an online forum or group for these cars, someone who is replacing their stock one for a burnt or hi-perf one

in which is really common

Buy a new one as you are taking a risk on a second hand one
