I'm considering upgrading my machine and I've seen a few AM2 motherboard bundles at a reasonable price, would it be a good move?

AM2 is supposed to be a really good processor socket, so if you like AMD, then it'd be a gread idea to move.

The advantage over skt939 is strictly the ability to run ddr2 RAM. The ability to run this RAM is almost negligible due to the significantly looser timings of the ddr2 RAM.

Your upgrade would require a new CPU, mobo, and RAM. At this point I would consider the new Intel platform. After years of playing second to AMD, Intel has again emerged as the current performance leader.

I've attached a great link for CPU comparisons with different benchmarks.

The advantage is the ability to use DDR2, however I have to disagree with that previous answer saying the increase is negligible. What he said was true when DDR2 came out, but they have advanced the technology enough so that DDR2 does show a good performance advantage over traditional DDR. He is right however about the new Core 2 Duos being faster than AMDs current chips.
