Consider the English Laurel (Cherry Laurel), which has dark evergreen foliage and flowers in Spring. Also Aucuba japonica variegata is worth trying. The leaves are green with white and yellow spotting.
Encourage some drainage with a layer of sharp stones, followed by plenty of organic compost worked into the trench.

rhodedendron if you have acidic soil but be very very careful to keep it under control so it doesn't take over.the flowers look beautiful.
