Well, I would think something very sentimental. Sure, we all love the fancier things in life (the diamonds, etc....LOL), but sometimes in this economy, that just isn't possible.
However, I will give you two examples of what my husband did that meant the WORLD to me. ((OK..three)).
A few years back, my cat died a few weeks before Christmas..the cat I had since I had been like 11. My husband surprised me with a locket and inside was a picture of that cat on one side and a picture of my other cat on the other side. I burst into tears. It was one of the greatest things ever simply because of the sentiment.
Another thing he did: My daughter was 3 months at her first Christmas. He had taken the large picture (like the 11X14 or something) from her Christmas pictures (I didn't know he had it) and had it matted, framed, and engraved a small plate on the bottom that had her name and the year of that Christmas.
And the other...it was that same Christmas...he bought a decorative pillow from even like Walmart.....and literally stitched (he totally winged it) my daughter's name, date of birth, and weight on it in matching floss.
It cost him like next to NOTHING, but again....sentimental things will get the girl everytime:) :)

A gift that I would know that it took him some thought and effort to pick out for me. Something that would show me he really knows who I am and what makes me smile. Something special yet unexpected that fits me. My perfect gift would be a stuffed animal wearing a locket with a picture of him inside, holding a bottle of perfume.

Clothes, i love clothes, and i'd say a ring/clothes/perfume, is a good gift, if you've been with your gf for a while, go with her to get a nice ring, you can get nice ones, for a nice price from argos lol, and/or u can get nice clothes from anywhere.
Nice underwear could be an idea too.

Something that is really special and from the heart is a good gift. To me the more special something is to you the more love you have for them.........( But diamonds are good,too) ;)

If I din't have a scarf,mitten,hat set, I would want one of them a set to match my coat or boots. Or a dvd or cd of my favorite .
