Things Fall Apart and the sequels -- anything by Chinua Achebe. Novels about Africa by an African who is a truly world class writer.

Look for reviews of recent books where they compare the writer to Chinua Achebe... he is the 'gold standard' to which all other writing on Africa is compared. Try to avoid some of these books about Africa based on the two week safari expeditions of Europeans and Americans who really dont get it... they are fantasy.

The Poisonwood Bible is a great book...I can also tell you the book Death in the Long Grass is a great "nonfiction" read, about some of the deadliest animals in Africa

Out of Africa -- Isak Denison -- fabulous book
King Solomon's Mines -- H. Rider Haggard
Heart of Darkness -- Joseph Conrad -- not an easy book to get into, but it is very interesting.

"Beasts of No Nation" by Uzodinma Iweala.

Shortish novel, paper back quite cheap to buy.

About the child soldiers of Africa -- very very powerful, and heartbreaking.

But not for the faint-hearted.
