In other words, if I backed some really important picture/info to one and put it in a fire proof safe, how long before those pics became corrupt?

Contrary to popular belief flash drives are still volatile memory. flash memory uses a relatively minute amount of power, when not connected to a USB port it draws the power it needs to maintain it's state from a small capacitor built into the drive. The amount of time you have will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but generally it's good for a reasonable amount of time, based on what they where designed for, which is high portability relatively short term storage. if you want long term storage I would look for other options. keep in mind that no media solution is infinite.

The answer depends on lots of factors, including:
- The Brand of the USB drive
- The amount of data being stored / retrieved every time
- The number of files (other than the total size of the file) being stored / restored
- The way you treat your USB drive:
..- You should NEVER physically remove it from your PC unless either the pc is off power, or you successfully safely-remove it.
..- You should never put it anyware near a strong magnetic field, although it is supposed to be protected from them, no one can guarentee that. Magnetic fields such as security doors, mobile phones, etc. you, also, should protect it from "physical incidents" such as dropping it, hitting it to a solid object, or even putting it in water or wet environment.

In conclusion: take good care of your USB Flash Desk, and it serves you greately!!!

Enjoy ;)

itl last forever theoretically ... but my experience with flashdrives is they can be corrupted very easily if they are handled the wrong way and are not the most reliable things .. if it was me i would have at least two backups if using a flash drive and maybe have the info on a dvd also ...

I'd go with dze on this one. It would be dangerous to keep important data on a stick without a backup.
