My 5 1/2 year old daughter wants an alarm clock for X-mas. Any opinions about whether a clock with "hands" or digits is better? She is familiar with both....

For a child I would get one with hands, maybe a Mickey Mouse (Example), or whatever the child like. The reason I choose this is; It a nostalgia that may be passing away. One day she may still have the Clock to show to her children and tell them; "This was how clocks were many years ago" Sorta like breaking out the old 8-Track and Playing some music. ;-)

I would say as long as she already knows how to tell time with both, the digital would be better for an alarm clock -- you can set the alarm more accurately than with the hands style.

Hands. Why - it gives her a graphical concept of time. Say, 15 minutes to do a chore means it starts here and ends there...........

two hours means the hand starts here and ends there and so on..... It helps them. They learn the concept of multiplication. You can stretch it and make it playful and teach her multiplication....There are lot of benefits to hands......

Digital takes the guess work out. Young minds need to be challenged.

It is the digital age and if she would prefer the digital, go digital.

They still teach the "hands" version in 1st and 2nd grade.
Also, the "Older" clocks are hands, so she will not miss out on the hands process of learning.

Unless, she is already able to tell time well, I would suggest the hands-they will help her learn and also make children have to look and remember to tell time, instead of just seeing the numbers and moving on.

I would say with hands. Children need to learn the basis before using shortcuts. ie learning math before using calculators. This will be good practice for her and allow you to interact with her to teach her.

Hands, so she'll learn to tell time.
