Read about the Bataan Death March and then make up your mind about, "...hard to take in"!

A view from another side: My father was not a POW but a soldier in a US POW camp during WW2, a very different experience. In his camp, many of the German prisoners, mostly teenagers forced into military service, were not unhappy to be there. The prisoners cooked the food for the US soldiers, cleaned camp, and did other chores. Several prisoners expressed the desire to remain in the US after the war, but regulations required that they be shipped home.
My wife's uncle, on the other hand, was a US pilot shot down over Tunisia in WW2 and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner of the Germans. His camp was not so pleasant, but he never claimed he was mistreated, although I have read that pilots were often treated better than foot soldiers. I guess there were a wide variety of prison camps and experiences. These two were fairly benign.
