And are there signs that you're getting close?

My system uses about one bag of salt per month. Check occasionally and ensure the salt level is above the water.

I try to empty the brine tank entirely every second year. Take it outside, flush with clean water, check and clean the float mechanism. Bring it back in, connect to the softener, and fill with new salt.

I go through about 150lbs a year with three people in our household. a good rule of thumb with softner salt, use only extra course solar salt, and always have the brine tank filled enough to where you can see no water above the salt. If you must use pellets in a pinch, only use one bag at a time.

I add salt when there is enough room to hold a whole bag. There are no signs. You just have to check the container periodically

Twice yearly would be enough......a simple test to check your water hardness is to see how easy/difficult it is to make a lather with a few drops of washing up liquid... if it lathers easily your salt is fine....hope this helps.
