... in free markets when we're talking about the minimum wage, environmental regulations, labelling and packaging, are also the same people who tend to favor strict immigration laws, farm subsidies, trade barriers and union regulations? I thought they believed the free market was always right.

Dakota 29575: I'm claiming no such things. All I'm saying is there's a bunch of people who will scream: "Government interference in free markets is wrong!" when government wants to do something that displeases them, and will them call on the government to interfere when the free market disadvantages them.

These are also the same people who believe the government should legislate personal morality.

Their basic goal is simply to get the government out of rich peoples' wallets and into poor peoples' bedrooms.

You've captured the logical contradiction of their position nicely.

Well, I'm against government intrusion into the market. Because they have no Constitutional authority to be there in the first place. As for immigration control, that is one of their duties as written in the Constitution.

But I'm against farm subsidies, tarriffs and trade barriers (unless in direct retaliation against other countries who have erected barriers) and against any action by government to support or deny unions.

As for unions - they prohibit the free market of labor. All states should be right-to-work states, with no forced joining of labor union in any shop or trade.

This is because not only are these ideas wrong, they're incompatible with the Constitution and the liberties, freedoms and rights inherent in the Constitution.

Speaking only for myself:

The minimum wage is NOT a free market idea.

I support strict immigration laws for National Security purposes. We need to keep the bad guys out.

I don't support farm subsidies, but I would balance that with the removal of ridiculous unfounded environmental regulations that hamstring our farmers and make it impossible for them to compete.

I support trade barriers only for communist and socialist countries who price their goods strategically with the purpose of harming the US economy, and for any country not cooperating with us in our War on Terror.

Unions are not a free market idea. They are socialist in nature. They use coercion and threats, backed by government interference, to artificially inflate the value of mostly unskilled labor, and hamper the ability of businesses to compete. Ultimately, the business is harmed and can no longer afford to employ the workers who thought they were benefiting from the union movement.

because the minimum wage is an artifical tariff on wages. if you want more money for your work then change jobs. as for illegal immigration why should i hire you for 6 dollars an hour when i can hire three illegals for the same 6 dollars. farm subsidies are a product of the depression. trade barriers proctect us from slave labor such as china. unions are no workers friend as the money flows from union dues to the head of the union and then to the demonrat party coffers

It seems to me that people don't believe in broad political ideals, they are only trying to encourage the government to act in their own best interest.
