There would be no advantage what so ever to giving an infant orange juice. In fact if the baby is being breast fed it could be a really bad idea. Anything that you give a breastfed baby, in a bottle, is teaching him that he does not have to nurse and it is also replacing an infinitely superior form of nutrition with an inferior one. Breast milk is the only thing that a small baby needs and he will totally thrive on it. He does not need any type of supplement and anything that you give him only undermines the advantages of breastfeeding. Some babies that get used to drinking out of bottles will become less efficient at breastfeeding because with bottles they do not have to put forth any effort, the liquid just flows into their mouths. They will quickly get lazy and enjoy this way of drinking. For this reason I advice new mothers NOT to take home the free samples of formula that they give you at the hospital. If you don't have it in the house you will not be tempted to give it to the baby. Breastfeeding is by far the superior way to feed a baby and he will not need any supplements to this diet for quite some time. You can talk to your pediatrician about this also. Enjoy your new baby! Blessings Lady Trinity~

Depending on the age... do not give OJ to a baby under 1 (by being older than one would make him/her a toddler). But babies should not have OJ, the citric acid is just that... ACID... and it's not good for their little tummies. Think about it, if you are breast feeding and you, yourself, drink too much OJ, what happens to baby.... *BARF* everywhere, and screaming and crying all night, not to mention heinous diaper rashes. So giving the OJ straight to baby will be a hundred times worse... Once baby becomes a toddler, then talk to your doctor about it. And even then, do not feed him/her milk and then OJ, because (try this at home) pour some milk in a glass, then add some OJ... what happens... *ew* it curdles really really bad and puts off the most foul smell known to mom-kind. Much, much worse than any diaper I've ever changed... common high school experiment with mixing acids... don't involve baby's delicate stomach.
You could literally scar the lining of the stomach and esophagus for life.

Although I do not know the answer to your specific question, I do want to warn that one should be careful not to allow a baby or toddler to drink from a bottle or sippy cup for an extended period of time, such as letting the child go to sleep with the bottle as a comfort. The acid from the OJ will eat away at the child's teeth enamel. A friend of mine learned this the hard way at the expense of her child's baby teeth, which, by the way, had to be capped until her permanent teeth came in.

babies? I thought it WASN'T an advantage to give either to a child before a year. Simply because their digestive systems are usually developed enough to hand it.
But otherwise, Milk is fortified w/ vitamin D and OJ is a natural source of vitamin C.

I'm not a nutritionist or doctor, but my doctor has told me the reason is because milk is a high source of vitamin D, while OJ is a high source of vitamin C, which are both essential in the healthy growth of young children.

How old is the baby? OJ has some good nutrients in it but I remember my daughter would be burned by the pulp if it got on her skin. You should not add new foods to an infant's diet without checking with your doctor.

Babies under 12 mos should not have OJ.
It takes away from the breastmilk/formula they should have.
It's too acidic for them.
They don't need the sugar either.

Over 12 mos, dilute it at least half and half with water. The vitamin C is good for them.
