You can do this wirelessly assuming that the computers are newer computers. What you'll need to get is:
1 - a wireless router to split the connection and share it with other computers.
1 - wireless pci card for the desktop computer
1 - network card (if you don't have it already) for the other computer.
What you have now for a connection to the internet is most likely this:
Internet -> Cable Modem -> Desktop Computer
what you'll end up with is:
Internet -> Cable Modem -> Wireless Router -> Split connection between computers (one wired, one wireless).
This is all assuming that you are using 2 desktop computers.

Yes, you can use one cable modem for two computers. The bad news is that you need to spend some money on a router (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Router). So you're connecting your router to your cable modem, and then you connect both your computers to the router.
If you have computers in two different rooms, you'll either need some very long wires for a wired router, or get yourself a wireless router, and wireless capability for the computers.
Read up on routers and setting up a home network. Google will get you a number of articles, and you can make informed purchase decisions.

Ok you need to go to radio shack(or a electronics store) and buy a router, you hook the router into the cable modem, then also buy the length of ethernet line you will need to run to the next room. Ie they sell ethernet cords that are like 3 feet long or 200 feet long. If its a desktop computer it won't have wireless internet, but if it is a laptop it will, which then you can just buy a wireless router......it can be done in any room, i run 3 computers off of my router and each are in a separete room

Yes TamTam,
The best is to buy a wireless router. Plug your cable modem into the wireless router . Make sure the PC in the other room has a wireless adapter. If not buy a wireless USB adapter. The first computer near the cable modem does not need to be in a wireless mode. You can plug that PC into the port of the wireless router and it will acts exactly as a wired router. If you need more detail emails me and I will walk you through.
Good luck,
Joe.

Are you considering going wireless? You must have a router first off. If your not going wireless you need to have CAT 5 cables that will reach your destination. NIC cards are also needed unless they are already apart of the computer. Running XP is a plus. Enable the security on the router SSID/WEP and you should be fine.

Go to Wal-Mart or Office Depot or any other store that sells computer equipment and ask for a Wireless Router. You may also need wireless adapters for both your computers. I recommend a linksys wireless router with two Linksys wireless adapters. Instructions will be included with the product.

Yes, to both questions. Not knowing what your cable modem is, and how many cat5 ports it has makes a better answer hard.
If both computers have wireless cards then buying a wireless router is the best and easiest way.......NO WIRES required......

There are a couple of ways to do it. the best way in my opinion is to spend $100 or so to get yourself a router. I prefer netgear myself, but D-Link and Linksys are ok options as well.
Good luck

there is alsos the possiblility of having the second computer looking to the first as a proxy. this will enable the second computer to be "hidden" beind the first, and virtually unhackable. i prefer a program called PROXYJ (not affiliated). it is freeware. the only problem with doing it that way is that yo have to have the first computer on to use the second comp on the internet
