My friends and I are planning a vacation to Florida. We're thinking of staying in hostels but I'm wondering how safe it is to do that. Will it be better to stay in motels? or are hostels fine saftey wise? Thanks!

Depending on how many friends you're traveling with, it may be better to get a hotel room, or to pay for an extra hostel bed or two to ensure that you get a room to yourself.

Hostels are not significantly different in Florida than they are elsewhere. Mostly you'll be OK, but you can never be absolutely sure.

Another possibility is using CouchSurfing.com to find locals who would be willing to let you and your friends stay in their home for free. (I say "for free", but it's nice to take your host out to dinner, or offer to help out in some other way, or bring a gift representing your home area.) I used CouchSurfing to find friendly locals on a 3000-mile road trip and never had a bad experience.

Don't know about Miami or the Keys but I used to live in Orlando.
In terms of safety, like any major city there are good areas and bad areas. I'm not overly sure where there are hostels in the Orlando area so my suggestion is to find a Fairfield Inn somewhere in the tourist areas of Orlando (either I-Drive, Kissimmee, Lake Buena Vista or by Universal Studios). The Fairfield Inn's are the economy hotels provided by Marriott International so if you have a Marriott Rewards card, you'll also earn points that you can redeem later on.

Hey! I in Orlando and have been to Miami and the Keys... I personally don't believe we have "hostels" here but there are hotels for VERY good prices ranging from $30 -100 a night!

The stay at the hotel is half the fun! So look online and I'm sure you'll find the perfect place for you...

But in the Keys it's more expensive... everything is! You've been warned =)

Safety wise? Stay in a motel.
