In the United States, nurse-midwives are advanced practice nurses who have specialized in the practice of obstetrical and gynecological care of relatively healthy women. In addition to a registered nursing license, many nurse-midwives have a master's degree in nursing. Nurse-midwives practice in hospitals and medical clinics, and may also deliver in birth centers and at home. They are able to prescribe medications in 48 out of the 50 states.
To answer your question...No they are not Doctors....however they are usually certified nurses and have studied extensively in the practice of childbirth.

Midwives are Registered Nurse Practitioners. They have a bachelors and a masters degree to get to that point but they are not doctors. Prescription med rights for certified midwives depend on the legislation of the state in which they practice. Even when they have the right to prescribe they often have to have a doctor sign off on it as well. This is being worked on by the American Nurses Association.

Not, they are definitely not medical doctors. If your midwife is also a nurse practioner then they can describe drugs. I don't think that all midwives have their nurse practioner though.

No they are specially trained nurses. OBs or gynocologists are the qualified drs in anything pregnancy NOT midwifes. Having said that, they can sometimes perscribe, it is dependant on the drug/symptom etc.

Im going to go to college to be midwide. Midwifes are REGISTERED NURSES that you can give only natural births, with no medications. Nurses can give you some medicine for afterwarsd maybe, but the Doctors are the only ones that can give epiderals, c sections and ETC.
