The space station has several points. The major point is that it enables scientists to conduct experiments in zero gravity that otherwise wouldn't be available to them. It also has allowed us to gather much needed information on the reaction of the human body to long periods in space.

The ISS is good for experiments of many sorts. There is also a chance the space station will be used as the building station for the ship that will get astronauts to mars, since it may be too big to build on earth and then try to get it out of the atmosphere.
I personally believe the station is a great way to have all these nations (17 I believe) to come together all in the name of science.

Here is the ISS mission:
"to conduct basic and applied research to support human exploration of space, and
to take advantage of the space environment as a laboratory for research -- scientific, technological, and commercial."

another site says:
"These studies are meant to pave the way for future missions, including a trip to our nearest neighboring planet, Mars, and beyond."

So basically, the spacestation is one big experiment with lots of potential. It's a stepping stone to Mars (another example of this is that with the spacestation, we are discovering the effects being in space a long time to a human body)

K that's all I can say about it at the moment. Check out that second source of mine. They seem to have a lot on it.

Zero earth gravitational point is called space station. But space station itself act as a centralized gravitational point for it own functionality purpose.

I dont know what purpose it has at all if any...never gave it much thought, but I'd wager a few of my tax dollars went into it.
