Intuitively it seems a PCI card would be faster and have less overhead than an external USB adapter - is this true?

your best bet would to go USB considering you have the available port, and it's not one that you're going to use later on down the road, and plus with USB you can move the antenna around for best reception. with PCI, you do get a better signal strength because of more power being pushed through, and the overhead is about the same with USB and PCI... my personal opinion would be PCI with an optional Antenna Extension, if you have the PCI slot available.

if not, go with USB.

it doesn't remember witch merchandise you get. in case you get a instantaneous G usb adapter u have the alternative of the position you want to positioned it because u can used any USB cable. yet when its a instantaneous N the adapter it does no longer use a USB cable. i take advantage of the PCI and it somewhat works large (it even works on abode windows Vista, the instantaneous G for sure) the element is you would must be careful at the same time as placing the PCI card because u do no longer favor to diminish to rubble the "inner organs" of your workstation even with the undeniable fact that it truly is basic to position in. one element when you're utilizing abode windows 2000 or decrease be particular to position in the drivers first. when you're utilizing abode windows XP SP1 (Srvice %.) or more effective set up the device first (USB or PCI) then use the CD. i wish this can answer your queston.

I've had a USB wireless adapter for a year and have had no problems whatsoever with it. I just didn't want to mess with the PCI. It's all a matter of your choice, anyhow!

Yes, I think so...plus, they work better to and won't just disappear sometimes like I have seen with USB. But it's all up to personal preference anyway. I am running USB because I don't have any free PCI slots and haven't had any problems...yet ;-)
