Is QUAD stuff just a failed Seventies thing, or is it still embraced by some people?

It seems like a good idea, and as a small kid I remember listening to my oldest Brothers true Quadraphonic set-up in the Eighties and I remember it sounded very cool. He had several Quad players, including a turntable, reciever, open reel and even a eight track unit, all set up for Quad. I think it was all SONY stuff, and he had a ton of albums in QUad. Too bad he sold off all of his gear to a collector a long time ago, or I would have bought it myself!

So, I am wondering if anyone still manufactures a true Quad set up, and if anyone sells new music mixed for Quad, or is this stuff been pushed aside a long while ago.

It's seems like a cool idea that could still have some appeal as opposed to mere Stereo.

I'm not sure if there's anything that's made today that would take full advantage of old quadraphonic media, however what is created today far exceeds that. Dolby Digital 5.1 has 5 discrete full-range channels plus a subwoofer track (the .1). 6.1 and 7.1 have additional matrixed channels and DTS-ES has 6 discrete channels.

Most of the time, you see DVD movies taking advantage of these multiple channel formats, but there is also music media which does as well. Some are also DVD videos which show concerts or music videos, some are DVD-audio, playable in most DVD players but are not very common. Super Audio CD's or SACD's support up to 5.1 channels. I've heard that some old quadraphonic material was re-released onto SACD since they can store the 4.0 format.

Quad was a low tech attempt at surround sound. Much better technology exists today.
