I've had a Mini iPod for around two and a half years now and I would advise you to not fall for the fashion icon trap but to decide what is best for you and purchase accordingly. The iPod met my requirements for capacity etc., but I've never come to terms with the wheel control which appears to have been designed with the main requirement of being different rather than user-friendly. So I would not buy one of those again, rather something which has more intuitive controls (i.e. like every other gadget). Why do you need hardware controls in the 21st century anyway?! Take your time to research your requirements and you will find something better and cheaper. For some, it all depends on which is more important to you - being fashionable or functional! But then, if the herd are buying iPods then by not buying one YOU will be fashionable ;-)

Contrary to popular belief, the Creative Zen is the best multimedia player (Audio/video). For pure audio, calculate the cost per MB of storage available and add up the plus features (display, equalizer, download ability, protected content play, types of formats playable, Battery life) and you will see that Sony, Creative, IRiver and Archos offer better audio media players. IPod is only slick looks with poor battery stamina

If you want one that holds alot of songs I'd go with the 80GB Apple Ipod($346).
If you want something cheaper but still holds a bunch of songs get either a Microsoft Zune (30GB $250) or a 30 GB Apple Ipod (30GB). But if you want something small and cheap go with either An Ipod Nano (2GB version $150)(4GB version $200), (8GB version $250), Or a SanDisk e260R (4GB $180), (c240, 1GB $80).

ipod is by far the most popular, but best is really about personal opinion. if you want something small and easy to use, and will hold a huge amount of songs, then ipod will work great. If you just want to play a few songs while exercising or doing other things, but doesnt have to hold 1000 or 20000 songs, then go for a cheaper model.
