You will only be able to upgrade processor to the maximum allowed by the motherboard. Check out which is the highest your motherboard/chipset will take and go for the fastest.

If you want to upgrade, I would suggest an AMD Athlon Dual Core processor. AMD recently slashed their prices by nearly 50% on all CPU's. Unfortunately this means getting a new Motherboard also and possibly RAM.If you can get a socket 939 board and CPU then you won't really need new memory although it would help. Most likely though you will have to get a socket AM2 board and CPU which means you will also need DDR2 RAM.

icman is correct in my opinion. XP2700+ is a socket A, clocked at 2.17 if I remember correctly. You will not have much luck trying to upgrade this.

I would consider a new build if I were you. Although AMD has kicked butt recently, and I've owned only AMD for the last several years, Intel's new core 2 duo is currently the best CPU.

Stick with AMD mate. I have a 64bit AMD although its getting old (1.5years) its guna last me a couple more years. It munches up Vista too with ease. I recommend getting 2 gig of ram to keep things running smoothly. check out some sellers on ebay too- I got a monster deal for £400 . All I have added was a Nvidia graphics card upgrade.

go to system then hardware, and get the model number for your motherboard. then look up what processor it will support and what socket. then buy that processor from newegg.

I hate to say this but, with that old of a cpu, if you want to upgrade to the newest cpu's, you would be better off buying a new computer(or build a new one).
