Sci-Fi Fic
Try anything from Olson Scott Card or Neil Gaiman
I'd recommend Ender's Game or Hart's Hope by Card and American Gods by Gaiman

Classics
Shakespeare -- begin with R&J and move on to Macbeth
I prefer the Bronte sisters and Austen but it's pretty "girly"
Victor Hugo's classics such as Les Miserables and Hunchback of Notre Dame can be very intersting.
Samuel Johnson's writings for enlightenment.

I would highly recommend getting any highschool reading list. It's a great place to start. Then you can move on to course lists from any colleges.

Non-Fiction
Autobiography of Malcolm X
Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt
Fast Food Nation
anything by Chomsky
People's History of the U.S.

Fiction
One Hundred Years of Solitude
Confederacy of Dunces
American Psycho
The Corrections

Graphic Novels
MAUS
Gaiman's Sandman series.

High Fidelity by Nick Hornby is very much about music, about a new, modern definition of males as vulnerable beings.
If you like it, try About a Boy, also by Nick Hornby. I like it even better.
Completely different, but also worth reading: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, by Mark Haddon. Hilarious and heart-breaking at he same time.
An older classic: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams.

Hope I have helped. Enjoy your reading!

Try Sex, Drugs & Cocoa Puffs by Chuck Klosterman,
Freakonomics is really interesting too,
any book by Russell Banks or Sylvia Plath,
Stuart: A life backwords, by Alexander Masterson,
Kite Runner was really good (author? not sure)

Those are the last couple I've read. I'd recommend them to anyone who is looking for something 'different'.
