I will usually try to get some physical affection and some kind words, maybe a long hot bath and then go to sleep and hope to wake up more relaxed and in a better mood.

I run cold water in the sink, cup it in my hands and hold it over
my eyes. It helps the swelling-up you get after a really long
crying jag, and the coolness calms me down some.
After that, I'll generally lie down someplace cool and quiet with
one of my older cats that will lie still and let me pet her.

not much can staunch the flow of tears. getting it all out is usually the best course, but if they MUST stop, keep pushing yourself (mentally) to stop the tears, to bury it inside until a later time.
