Yes, I think some type of service. Not all people are suited to the military and have skills in other areas.
It would help the country and it would help people feel more integrated with their country too.
It would help people who were 'depressed' to feel as though they are doing something positive.

I think 'required' is going a bit far. However, a 'Civil Service' structured along the same lines as 'Military Service' in which Community, State & National projects could be accomplished by a body of people well trained in the basics of community service, natural conservation, health & safety as well as others.
There are some programs out there, but I think they could be better and more useful with a proper management and larger size. Discarded Military bases could be converted into training and project centers. Imagine what New Orleans would be like today if a strong body of well trained and coordinated civil servants could have been called up to service after Katrina.

Do you recall that Bush proposed 2 years of community service once? I believe it was in the speech where he named the Axis of Evil countries? I thought it was an excellent idea and then he dropped it.
I like your idea better. 2 years of military service or community service. The country would benefit, and so would the kids. So many are not ready for college, and need to develop a sense of confidence grounded in real life accomplishment and discipline.

interesting idea, but ppl also reserve the right to do what they want with their lives, and if these tasks would be getting in the way of their other occupation then no, but their occupation could be investigated, to make sure they arent just being lazy or lying.
but a interestingly good idea none the less, as long as it doesnt get in the way of those who do something else, which is equally plausable.

I think the idea behind America is that all it's people are free. That means they shouldn't be obliged to do anything. I think they should be at least required to vote though, even if it's a none of the above vote.

I do not understand why there isnt a mandatory military service to your country. Many other countries have this.

Those of us who attend Church do all that (except the military but we send care packages to them) and do it without being forced by the Government to do it.
BUT - I think in order to receive welfare payments you MUST do those things as a service to get your check. They TRIED that in Milwaukee about a decade ago and the people said it was "slavery". How is getting money for doing a job slavery? I do not know...
They played the race card and it was shot down. They went back to getting money for nothing.
