The 1961 Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1, 1961, and lasted until November 30, 1961. These dates conventionally delimit the period of each year when most tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic basin. The season had 7 major hurricanes, the second highest number on record, despite having only 8 total hurricanes. It is also one of only three seasons to have two hurricanes reach Category 5 status on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, the others being the 1960 season and the 2005 season.

The two Category 5 hurricanes were Carla and Hattie.
