Your question has thousands of answers depending on the root cause of the problem.

If you are running Windows XP and you get blue screens, it is most likely due to a faulty piece of hardware, such as bad RAM or something else going bad on the motherboard.

If your PC is rebooting within the OS, it could be a virus or a poorly written application or device driver(s)

Being low on RAM won't cause reboots, but you will hear your hard drive thrashing due to excessive memory paging into and out of the disk as the swap file grows in size and your PC will run very sluggishly.

Thermal shutdown due to overheating is just as its name implies, a shutdown. The PC will remain off, not reboot.

A bad power supply can also be the source of reboots if the motherboard and its components are not getting the sufficient voltage and current they need to operate properly

Don't forget the leaky capacitors that are in Taiwanese products!

the Taiwan manufacturers used capacitors in consumer products, including 39 makers of computer boards. Almost all production for over 5 years was tainted.

Even after they knew about the problems because of the stolen secret formula that was sabotaged by the maker whom they robbed, they continued to use the bad parts, and expect US, the consumers, to PAY FOR IT!

I am SOOOOO PISSED because I have 10 units here that are broken, and will cost me about $2,000 to replace!!!

yes, I already spent the money to order and replace all the leaky caps. but, most of the regulators were damaged. At this point, it is better to buy some quality mainboards with CPUs and memory, installed and tested. http://pricewatch.com but specify only Japan or China, or Malasia, or Singapore, etc.

BOYCOTT TAIWAN!!! They commited industrial espionage, and now want US to pay the $100 million for it!!!

I think the MOST common thing is the automatic update from MicroSoft. When your computer downloads the updates, it usually needs to restart to put them into effect. If you are not around when the computer prompts, it will often restart on its own.
Hope that helps!

Overheating or bad power supply are the 2 most common.
It could also be a program (virus, etc.). You can use SpeedFan to check your temperatures and voltages.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
