Could this money not have been better spent? How many Care Packages could have been sent to US Troops with this amount of money or at least a couple of boxes of ammo?

Is this not hypocrysy at it's finest? Belive me, she didn't whip out her own American Express Card to pay for that dress.

Side Note: 3 other women showed up in the SAME dress so Mrs. Bush quietly slipped back home to change...she wore it for approximately 45 minutes.

The piggishness and excesses of the rich, what are you going to do? It's always been this way...
But dresses even for the richest hollywood celebrities are more like 5,000 to 10,000 dollars. Even the most expensive dress is not much more....why would it be, that makes no sense. But anyway, it's still wasteful.
People in authority squander their money on unnecessary material things whilst people are suffering and dying. It's not just her, imagine all the other important public figures wearing these dresses? It's just plain sinful.
They get ripped off too.
I'm an artist and like to create.
Where can I get in the position and have the cahonas to charge someone 8000 times what it cost to make??? But then, I wonder how the people who charged the tax payers spent it? hmm.

Overly Rich people get really dumb because their minds get lazy, it's from charging others to think for them.

What is it any of our business how Laura Bush spends money legally earned by her family? Just because her husband is president doesn't mean she has to give up living as extravagantly as she wishes. An $84,000 dress is something to take note of, but since it was $8,400 that is not really something that should be on the public's radar. First ladies should wear lovely gowns, they represent the United States. Of course, the dress was likely "borrowed" from a designer, which makes this conversation moot.

It's hypocrisy at is finest. I'm tired of people wearing expensive clothes when it can be spend on other useful things. The American people are paying for that dress! The president has an expense account which can use for parties and clothes.

I think it was $8400, not 84 thousand. And I know that is a ton of money to spend. I will say I am a strong opponent of Bush, but truly, can we have our First Lady representing this nation in public wearing something she picked up at JCPenney's? I mean, that may be fine for average people, but not for the wife of the President. If our president cannot represent this nation adequately, must his wife look low-rent, too?

Yes do you get on the celebrity's for wasting there money partying or spending there money on stuff? No. And I also doubt that the dress cost that much. And what you do with your own money is your business. But if anyone wants to point fingers lets start with Clinton and the money he still gets from charging our government to protect him. Look it up and you'll see what I mean.

The dress was either loaned to her by the designer or she paid
for it with her own money.

Obviously you have no idea as to how the Presidency works
they pay for every thing they do out of there own pockets.

Do some research before you show your mentality.

Thank you very much, while you're up!!!

The dress in question was an $8,400.00 Oscar deLarenta design. These are ususally donated to first ladies. Jackie Kennedy never paid for anything.

Actually Mrs. Bush's dress cost $8,500, not $84,000. Note this is a "Faux News" post from 7 years ago.

I wonder if the other 3 women spent as much? Anyway, if that's true, she may not have been aware of the price tag. If she was, I'm sure she regrets it now. Nothing against Laura, it's her nincompoop hubby I don't care for.

Unless you can prove something I wouldnt say anything. I doubt it was 84 grand. Probably 8500 dollars which you can easily spend on a designer dress. I am quite sure she did pay for it herself or got the dress for free as many famous people do since, exposure helps a designer sell better.
