My cousins are bi-lingual (Swedish and English). My aunt and uncle simply spoke both languages to them from birth. If you are not bilingual, I would suggest teaching a second language as early as possible. The younger the child is, the easier it is for him/her to learn a second language. My children are both learning Spanish and they are 8 and 6 (wish I would have started sooner!).

Children are sponges. Expose them to a second language as soon as you can. "Teaching" them a second language doesn't have to mean what you might traditionally think of as teaching. Basic exposure to it when they're young is fine... like, start counting things in the other language. Use the words of the other language in addition to English when you describe things they are playing with... and so on. The best time to start a child with more than one language is while they are young.

Age two is a good age because they are working on their English as well so it's easy to teach them another language while working on English. Many children in Arizona at my daughter's pre-school know Spanish as well as English and when living in Portugal my daughter picked up some Portuguese from her baby sitter.

As early as possible. Stephen Pinker asserts that pre-puberty we have a facility for learning languages that we lose as we get older.
My mum taught me some basic French when I was very little and I definitely had the advantage over classmates at school when we started studying French aged 11.

The more youthful the greater. There are 2 situations quite. One in which you wish the youngster to be bilingual (assuming you or your accomplice talk German as good as English), the opposite in which you quite simply wish to educate them slightly. If you're speakme each languages at residence, kids will select them each up. The unusual factor is that their brains will normally gain knowledge of which phrases belong to which one. You might discover that at university (let's imagine its an English university, for instance) they're moderately in the back of their friends in English to start with. They will nonetheless seize up. Someone acknowledged the way it can support their intelligence and it might. Studies do advise that bilingual kids and adults can also be extra bendy with their minds. I consider you're giving your youngster one of the most fine viable possibilities to prevail should you begin instructing them a moment language from an overly younger age. It opens up such a lot of doorways, and it's not quite an attempt both as they gain knowledge of clearly. It is fine to be regular even though. Rather than quite simply speakme English or German across the youngster randomly, you could for instance (while they're younger) have one mother or father who continuously speaks German and person who speaks English. Or if they're residing in an English speakme nation, so talk English at university and instantly after coming residence, then German within the night. If it isn't the case that you just or your accomplice talk each languages, it's nonetheless actual that you just must begin more youthful. There are lots of DVDs and CDs aimed toward babies. I'm now not partial to Disney, however their Disney English variety works from age one million up quite. I'm certain there are an identical matters for German. If you're quite simply instructing them slightly of German, they'll most likely disregard very speedily if they do not have a hazard to make use of it. Children who spend for instance the primary five years in their existence in a international nation will normally disregard that language after they go back to and English speakme one, if there's no possibility to make use of it and it isn't spoken at residence. Sorry for the lengthy reply, wish a few of it's valuable!

As soon as possible. Do not worry about the child becoming confused between the two languages. Our minds are able to differentiate the sounds of one language and the sounds of another.
