I am a collections telemarketer, and I can give you some practical advice.
First, access the debt. How much do you owe and to whom? How much is your monthly income, and how much of that can you allocate to paying off the debt?
Figure up a monthly tally of what you absolutely need, like food, mortgage or rent, electricity, water, and any other necessities. Things like cable and Internet can not count unless your job requires an Internet connection.
Now, after you have figured out how much you owe and how much you can pay, contact the people whom you owe to. Is it the Electric Company? Your Credit Card holder?
Whoever it is, talk to them and ask them about a plan to pay off within a set time. See if they offer extensions. Most companies are glad to help so long as you can prove you will be honest and pay within the limits they set.
You can also contact your local Human Services. They will provide you with contacts who can help with bills and debt. Here is the official website. http://www.hhs.gov/ You will need to contact the one nearest you in whatever city and county you live in.
I hope this helps.

Save money throughout the year to spend and stick to that budget. Don't use credit cards. Make homemade gifts. Get an extra job. Appreciate the true meaning of Christmas and give the gift of yourself and your time, instead of buying gifts....
