Did you install the operating system from the friend's computer as well? What I'm asking is whether you formatted the hard drive on your friend's computer and then just tried to copy all of the files from his hard drive onto yours. If that's the case, of course your operating system won't load! What's missing are the boot sector files which can only be installed during the windows installation process without going through a huge hack.

Two possible things in my experience. One somehow the registry part of your windows operating system got deleted, hacked or damaged. These are important because they give the orders and settings to boot up the system. If they are damaged or bypassed when booting up, its like you cars ignition turning over and over with out catching. The second problem could be a damaged hard drive, it just can't read the part of the drive that holds those start up files.
The way to try and fix it would be to boot the emergency disk that came with your system, it may give you a chance just to reset the intial programs on your computer without erasing all the data....or it may start you out from square one losing everything.
The other problem answer would be to replace your hard drive which you will lose all of your data.
I had a similar problem when I dropped my laptop and on my PC when I tryed to install a partition to run several OS's at once...I know its frustrating, good luck.

Your files are gone now that your hard drive is reformatted.
To fix the loading of WIndows, put in Windows XP cd in the CD drive. I am assuming you have Windows XP.
Then restart your PC and wait for your PC to boot from the CD.
It may run a diagnostic of your PC, and will 'repair' your hard drive. If that 'repair' option comes up.
NOTE: when I say repair, it will not recover your personal files e.g. documents, mp3 files. Instead it fixes Windows XP errors.
See link below for more information.

If you formatted, you lost everything. Formatting erases the hard drive completely.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
