it was Dusty, he was not realted to the cowboy. At the end, the cowboy went to the van to talk to his brother about going on tour with that girl's band. His brother told Trucker(cowboy) it was okay and they should go on tour. He understood why he was going to stay behind and as long as he played music he would be okay. He told Trucker not to forget who he was. A cowboy listening to music in his mama's kitchen,
So Trucker is walking back towrds the club and meanwhile Dusty the junkie, tried to pawn an amp, but the serial number was filed off, so he was not able to pawn it. He had the gun from the owner of the club, (they never explain how he got the gun). As Dusty is walking towards the club, he meets with Trucker and the Girl who they are going to go on tour. They tell Dusty the good news, but then the girl tells them they have to change their look and they want to market them into pop not country. trucker says no.and turns the deal down. Dusty gets really mad and tells Trucker they are going to get the deal and tells him to give him some money (he has the gun pointed to Trucker at this time) and as Dusty is ranting he shoots Trucker, who dies instantly. The girl says I was never here and runs away. She was also arrested.

"princesscutesmile" is correct except that Dusty did pawn the amp, but the pawn shop owner wouldn't let him pawn the gun because the serial number on the gun had been file down/off. As for how he got the gun, he probably stole it when no one was looking (just like he stole the guitar).
Before he got shot, Trucker said that he was going to continue playing country music with his brother, and that he hoped Honey, his wife, would take him back because that was where he belonged.

Surprise, surprise. It was the dope head brother. He met the cowboy and the new girlfriend singer outside the club and he needed money for his "candy cane". When the cowboy wouldn't give it to him he took out the gun and it went off. I don't think he really wanted to do it though. In the end he confessed everything.
