I rent out a few places and I have had tenants ask to have the place cleaned prior. I do this and I always say if it is too bad and dirty for me to live in I will not rent it out. I check between tenants and I replace if it is bad and if not I still steamclean each move and I also paint nuetral colours too. Most of my tenants are long term too and average is 5 years so far. So I must be doing something right. I guess I would ask to either have it cleaned and or replaced if it is really bad if I were you. I just put myself in the shoes of my tenants before I put my places up for rent each time and I am always on top of repairs too. After all I want to have good tenants and also to keep my place looking good to maintain value.

Don't get into doing this kind of stuff in a rental house without the knowledge, consent, and participation of the landlord. Both of these are potentially very large projects which might actually be impossible without major structural work, and the woodstove could be a safety issue. Hard to say without seeing the stuff. It isn't your house, it's the landlord's house and the landlord probably won't want a totally inexperienced person working on it. Speaking as a former landlord, most tenants don't know how to do much work around a house, why would they? unless they're in a trade. Besides, you could work your *ss off doing it all and then in six months have to leave the house because the landlord decides to sell or gets hit by a bus and dies and the house has to be sold to settle the estate. Save your ambition and time for when you own your own house.

Make them do it before you move in... if they won't find another place. As a renter it is not your responsibility to clean an apt before you move in.
If they want to compensate you for this, by cutting the rent in half the first month and you don't mind cleaning it, that may be something to consider.

Ask them if the carpets will be cleaned before you move in. Every place I have lived they have cleaned the carpets before the new tenant moves in. You really shouldn't have to ask... but you defiantly should not be the one to pay for the carpets to get cleaned. The previous tenants mess is not your responsibility... it is the landlords...

not sure about where you live, But in the U.S. it is law that the carpets be cleaned befor new tenents move in. Regaurdless if you signed anything or not. Check with a local attorney to find out if this is apllicable in your area.

They should clean it cos most of them take money out of your deposit when you leave to clean it ready for the next occupants. - Having said that when i moved into my rented place there was human sh*t on the carpet.

If you havent signed the lease yet - you could ask them ... but if you have already signed - you can ask - but they will proabably tell you where to go... have as little contact with the agents as possible.. change it yourself..go down the Barras ... Eddies Carpets will do you a good deal..

ASK. Think about it this way. If they clean it and it still stinks then you won't want to move in anyway. It might be from a cat and it won't go away.

MY GOD, £525 a month is a mortgage, stay with your parents if you can, and save for a house that will be yours.
