It all depends on who you talk too. Ask your grandfather, your father, your son, and they all have a different answer. For an overall answer, I would say Babe Ruth, only because when you talk about baseball to fans and non-fans, they associate Ruth with baseball history.
You could go through the years and get a different player by decade, but in the last 10 years, I would guess it would have been Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa (before the steroid scandal) when they were having thier homerun chases. Ask a fan whose side they were on, and I'll bet they bought memorabilia for that time.
Today, I think it would Derek Jeter and David Ortiz.

I have to say Ron Santo. He has raised $50 million for diabetes research and is such a funny and enthusiastic broadcaster. His story inspires alot of people and his peers admire him so much. Also like someone else said - the world cried when Clemente died so it could be him too. This is the most loved baseball player not the most famous so disregard the Babe Ruth votes because he was the north end of a horse walking south. If he were alive he would even say he was not loved but he did not care.

Roberto Clemente by far. Not only was he an outstanding player he was an even better person off the field. And his sudden and tragic death sadley but true drew a lot of people in that would not have normally been baseball fans.

Not even close really. Babe Ruth is still the most popular and in his day he was the most loved because of his gregarious personality and he really did love kids because he was a big kid hinself with a big heart made of pure gold. He had his bad side like most of us but back then the media protected him unlike today's media. There never will be another Babe Ruth who was idolized by millions even overseas!

The greatest hitter of all time, Pete Rose. Pete has became huge over the whole gambling scandal. Yes, he made bets on baseball. He made them on his own team though. He never betted against them. Baseball does not put him in the hall, because he's not a yankee, or a sox. We have no problem with putting cheaters in though. He has became a player who everyone has growed to love because of his hustle, and the screwing that baseball is giving him.
