I was listening to a commerical for CNN or something, and the announcer used the term "gays." I found it a little strange because, in turn, do we say "straights?" What's up?

Well, to give further details of what I'm trying to ask (jessecolt...), I'm not really questioning the term "gay" or "straight" and why we use it... it's because he said "gays" with an "s."

He said something like: "Tonight at 8, find out what "gays" are doing..."

We don't say: "Tonight at 8, find out what "straights" are doing...

...get it? Don't over-analyze this, it was just a question that popped into my head when i heard that guy on the radio today.

...I really appreciate your "answers" everyone. :)

From reading them, I am "lost for words," and I don't have the capability to choose a "right" answer, because, I don't know if there is one.

Someone once said:
“You have your way.
I have my way.
As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way,
it does not exist.”

...majority votes on this one.

Thanks again.

The person probably said that because he or she is probably straight. I call people who aren't gay straight all the time when I am talking about their sex life. Other then that I really never say gay or straight. I just no you are you, not you sex preference.

Labels are used to define a certain group of people...

Blacks
Asians
Arabs
Caucasians
Fundamentalists
Democrats
Republicans

And although labels are really short of nothing other than hasty generalizations that more often than not show our ignorance... They are also useful to minimize the use of words.. Which is pretty useful in news... Just think how many words it would take for him to be politically correct?

And yes we use the term straights... because we're gays, and from our perspective, that defines those that are not gays, but we don't mean it in a derogatory way.

Before we clench our fists, let's think of the person's motive in saying the word, if there's no malice, then there's really no harm done.

yes.. us "gays" call people straight but if we were reporting the news we wouldnt be sit there and say "hey did you hear what happend with those straights last night"..
I dont get it either.. to me its almost a way to separate us form the rest of society... Not to ride the coattails of the Civil Rights movement but its like in the 60's when blcks werent a part of society as a whole.. they were "the blacks".. The reporter probably should have said "the gay community" or something to that affect.. Now i am not sure if i even really answered your question.. but rather i gave my opinion i suppose

You know gay means to be happy to so l guess if everyone in the world is happy they are gay to so they need too find a new word or just don't say anything at all.
