In movies when you see someone lost in dessert or in westerns when they have been travelling for miles water has run out then all of a sudden they see a river my question is is the water clean when they are drinking it.

Apart from the odd shopping trolly, car tyre and dead cat, yeah it's safe.

Running water is clean, unless there is a factory pumping out pollutants between you and the source. In reality, when you are a hairs breadth from death after walking through the desert and find a stinking, stagnant pool of water, you probably would have a sip to keep you going till you could get to a hospital. In the movies of course, a rich and famous actor will demand the pool be filled with perrier or something and have non toxic floaters chucked in for effect!

LOL! Never thought of that... movies make you believe false things.. so in the movie it is clean, in real life it shouldn't. Still clean or not clean.. if you've been days lost without water, one would drink it anyway.

In the desert, there is very little to pollute it, if it is free flowing it is possibly okay, if it doesn`t flow, then it will be foul, as has been said if there are fish in it its` alright, When I was a child, my mother told me never to eat or drink anything that birds won`t eat or drink, I have found that to be absolutely true.

Isn't it usually just a cruel mirage in most movies? You know the type of thing: our parched hero manages a staggered little run to the much needed oasis only to dive into the dry sand, grasping at it in frustration.

In the movies it may be, because actors wont drink dirty water. But in nature they are never clean.

It is properly clean so the actors to drink but if that happened in real life I think it would be dirty

Good question, that is why it is only at the movies. Chances are is filled with bacteria, and if you don't see fish in it or birds drinking it, i wouldn't.
