They have thick layered feathers that insulates their bodies.

They use their body fat to protect them during the coldest winter months, but they also huddle together in a circular form and take turns shifting from the outside of the circle to the inside of the circle, especially while they are protecting the egg. They have adapted to the climate in antarctica and anywhere else they may be living. If a penguin gets lost from the pack, then they will usually freeze to death.

How do penguins keep warm?

Staying just the right temperature is a problem for penguins. They need to stay cool enough when the sun is beating down on them, and warm enough when the temperatures drop below zero!

How do you stay warm enough in winter-time? Or cool enough in the hot summer?

Penguins are warm-blooded, like you are, but they have insulation that helps them withstand extremely cold temperatures. They use their small feathers, which are covered with a layer of light oil and are overlapped like shingles on a roof. They ruffle up their feathers and make pockets of air just underneath their feathers, where there is a layer of blubber, which helps hold in the heat.

Penguins also have other ways of adapting to their environment:

their bodies are shaped like submarines to help them cut
through the water
they have solid, heavy bones to increase body weight for
easier diving
penguins have stiff, short wings that can be used like paddles
layers of insulation on their bodies help to keep heat from
escaping

They can freeze in severe temperatures, they huddle together and move around to keep warm.

Most of the serious comments above are quite correct, They also have a very different system of blood circulation to their feet that prevents body heat loss when standing on ice.

coz they're thick skinned. and have evolved to cope with the temperatures. imagine how it'd feel having a bath in that arctic water! brrrrr

"did you know" that when they all huddle in large groups that they have to alternate and switch places so that the ones round the outside don't get too cold. You learn something new every day!

Because their outer feathers are waterproof and windproof. The outer feathers act like a shell - the inner feathers are fluffy - and act as insulation.

Don't they keep warm with dancing? I seem to recall seeing one in living colour energetically tapdancing.
