no not at all. Here in Ireland the smoking ban was enforced a few years ago and it has been a great success. I think everyone benefits....and I'm a smoker!!
I used to hate coming home from the pub or nightclub and my clothes and hair stinking of smoke....it was disgusting and I can only imagine how horrible it was for non-smokers!!
All bars and clubs have smoking areas now anyway so you can go enjoy your smoke in a sheltered heated area....it's really not a problem.
Bars and clubs have not suffered from it as people who smoke still go out like they used to. However I have noticed I won't smoke as much on a night out as I used to when I could smoke inside which of course is a good thing!!
I definatly think it will work in England...there was a big thing made about it when it came in here but people adapt to these things and now that we have, it seems natural! It would feel very very strange to me to light up inside a pub now!!
Overall the smoking ban is a great idea and should be fully supported!

The ban will start next summer but will not be exclusive to all public places, at first it will only affect the workplace, some pubs, cafés and restaurants. Pubs that don't serve food and private members clubs will not have to adhere to the ban. It will not be fully in place until 2008 at the earliest. As a smoker, banning smoking in public places isn't a problem because I can understand the majority of people wanting to eat their dinner or enjoy a drink in a smoke free area but to extend the ban (which they're talking about) to outside offices etc.. is ridiculous.

My opinion (and many non-smokers even agree with this) smoking bans are just plain ridiculous. Yes, it does hurt the bar owners. It's giving the government too much control over people's lives. Ohio just passed a smoking ban in November (among other crap on the ballot...given what I have seen and heard of all the issues, I don't think a lot of people understood what the were really ovting for) that was supposed to take effect last week, but now they are going to take 6 months to work the bugs out (in the meantime, in my area, given the bars just over the stateline time toe prepare for the additional customers). Restaurants is one thing...bars, bowling alleys, etc is a whole other ballgame.

Hmm lets say there are two bars and one of them permits smoking and the other doesn't. Me as a smoker would probably go to the one that permits smoking cause smoking and beer goes hand in hand. Well the law will have to be forced upon inorder to make it effective and that by any means is no easy feat.

i think it will work, bars and pubs will not suffer less profits if they can offer a smoke free environment as it will attract more families etc who spend more money on food etc then smokers who just buy drinks. i think it will reduce the number of smokers but only by a little, if a person really wants to light up they will find a plae where they can

I think a lot of people will cause a riot but if they make it illegal and really re enforce it by arresting people if they are found smoking or stuff like that then yeah i think it would work but if they really want to get rid of smoking they should shut down the factories that make cigarettes and those stuff.

I think it might. I didn't realize they were banning smoking (public, I assume) there. I use to drink. Smoking and drinking go hand in hand, literally, if you do both. If I still drank I wouldn't go to a bar if I couldn't smoke, knowing I'd want to light up once I got a beer in me.

I would think so. Here in the US, people doubted the California ban would work, but it did - and generally, the British are a more law-abiding lot than Americans!

It will only work to give government even more control over your lives, and steal more rights and freedoms.
To trade freedom and liberty for freedom from smoke, not even for the pretense of security, is to embrace servitude and serfdom to a nanny-state.
Funny how people are so willing and eager to embrace Big Brother.

Will people stop smoking. No. Will it hurt bars etc. No. I don't think anyone goes there to smoke. They go there for beer 'n people, so to say. It will create somekind of "smokers area" outside the bar though.
